Fed: Jobs figures could provide rates clue
Jobs figures out today could provide a clue as to whether interest rates will rise
before the end of the year.
Official unemployment figures for July will be released by the Australian Bureau of
Statistics and are expected to show a strong rise in jobs.
The case for a rate rise has been bolstered by consumer confidence figures, which fell
back a notch in August but remained close to 10-year highs.
Homeowners have been spared interest rate hikes so far this year although the Reserve
Bank said this week it would be surprising if rates didn't rise further in the current
economic expansion.
Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has played down the chance of a rate rise any time soon, saying
he hopes the expansion -- now in its 14th year -- will continue.
