WA:Perth jockey charged after race day fracas
PERTH, Aug 15 AAP - A Perth jockey has been charged with disorderly conduct and a drug
offence following a fracas with a drug tester at last weekend's Broome Cup carnival.
The 31-year-old jockey from Ascot, who was booked for six rides on Saturday including
the $80,000 Broome Cup, was required to provide a urine sample about half an hour before
the first race.
A police spokeswoman said after the jockey provided the sample, which was a standard
test for all jockeys, he allegedly started abusing the drug tester and became quite aggressive.
Broome Turf Club manager Doug Milner said he was stood down for the day's meet and
escorted off the track.
"He became quite agitated because he had worked quite hard during the week to get under
weight and he hurtled verbal abuse around but basically it was no more than that," Mr
Milner told AAP.
Later that evening while the jockey was at Broome Airport getting ready to board his
flight back to Perth, he allegedly confronted the drug tester again.
According to police he started abusing him as well making threats which prompted onlookers
to call police.
"Police arrested him and were walking him through the airport car park when he's taken
off," a spokeswoman told AAP.
Officers chased after him on foot before bringing him back to Broome police station
where they charged him with disorderly behaviour in public, escaping lawful custody and
possessing a prohibited drug which is believed to be cannabis.
The jockey is due to appear in Broome Magistrates Court on September 10.
The man's jockey licence has been suspended pending a race stewards inquiry.

NSW: Fraudster jailed for two years
SYDNEY, Feb 2 AAP - A Sydney restaurant owner will serve at least two years' jail for
a string of identity frauds and swindling more than $100,000 in cheques.
Alex Rusli, 35, was today sentenced to three-and-a-half years with a two-year non-parole
period, backdated to his arrest in August 2005, after pleading guilty to 15 state and
federal identity fraud and immigration offences.
Rusli, who also is known by three other names, admitted to possessing false Australian
passports and NSW driver's licences, as well as false international passports from Indonesia,
the United Kingdom, Korea and France.
He also admitted to possessing forged immigration stamps, Visa labels and birth certificates.
Rusli, whose wife and two young children were present in the NSW District Court today,
also admitted to intercepting cheques totalling more than $113,000 in the mail, and then
using false identities to set up bogus bank accounts in which he deposited the cheques.
Sentencing Rusli, Judge Robyn Tupman said criminal acts such as his contributed to
the increasing of bank fees and paperwork needed to open bank accounts.
"In reality the whole community is disadvantaged as a result," Judge Tupman said.
Rusli will be eligible for parole on August 25 this year.

VIC:Vic mum feared boys would die in arms
MELBOURNE, April 18 AAP - A mother feared her two sons would die in her arms after
they were overcome by carbon monoxide fumes during a boat trip.
The parents performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the boys, who became sick after
one of the boat's engines failed, as the family headed back to shore on Sunday after a
day out on Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay.
The boys, aged seven and eight, had been sitting in the cabin when their parents noticed
something was wrong.
Julie Howick went to check on the boys, initially believing they had fallen asleep,
but when she couldn't rouse them, she dragged them to the top deck of the boat and started
mouth-to-mouth.
"Scary doesn't even begin to cover it," Ms Howick told reporters on Monday.
"I thought both of them were going to die in my arms last night."
Paramedic Lisa Pliksh said the boys were conscious and breathing when paramedics met
the boat on Sunday night at Bonbeach.
They were taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition.
Ms Pliksh said carbon monoxide was the likely cause of the boys' illness.
"We suspect the boys may have been exposed to carbon monoxide fumes as one of the engines
had failed," she said.
"The boys were incredibly lucky the parents weren't in the same confined space as them.
"The parents weren't affected and were able to make sure the boys were safe.
"They have done a great job in making sure the boys were breathing and getting them
to shore as safely as they could."
Ms Howick said she didn't think of carbon monoxide fumes as being the cause of the
illness until it was suggested by ambulance crews.
"I kept thinking it was something they'd eaten. It didn't even occur to me until we
got into the ambulance and they had made that assumption."

--John Lewis at liberty to reduce Ocado stake
INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
11 January 2011 -- The pension fund of the John Lewis partnership has received the green light to reduce its stake in Ocado (LON:OCDO) after the 180-day period following the online grocery group's initial public offering (IPO) expired on 2 January 2011, the Financial Times reported.
The pension fund offloaded nearly 50% of its holding in Ocado in the GBP800m (USD1.2bn/EUR961m) IPO last July and currently has a stake of some 11%.
Ocado's finance director Andrew Bracey said that the pension fund would not be allowed to axe its stake before the publication of the annual results as it had a director on Ocado's board.
The lock-up expired as Ocado publicly announced that gross sales went up 27.4% to GBP178.9m in the four months to 28 November. Then gross sales for the holiday season to 26 December increased by 26.7% to GBP50.9m. The full-year gross sales to 28 November were GBP551.1m, up 29%.

FED:Editorials, Saturday, August 21, 2010
SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - Despite two months of a Gillard prime ministership and an intense
election campaign, it is not clear Labor has learnt much from the disastrous Rudd experiment,
The Australian says in its editorial today.
Julia Gillard has not got the message about the big government approach manifested
in the NBN, a $43 billion project that its chief executive, Mike Quigley, concedes will
not produce the commercial returns a private investor would demand.
Some readers may be surprised we have endorsed Tony Abbott, given that we backed Labor
last time, the newspaper says.
We, like voters, have been disappointed by the wasteful and wasted Rudd years.
The tradesmen and small-business operators, the new floating vote, who turned to Mr
Rudd in 2007 have seen through the spin and are heading back to Mr Abbott.
The Sydney Morning Herald says political life has turned from a calling or a duty into a career.
Too often the politicians this careerism produces are not leaders but followers: professional
enough to assess tiny shifts in public opinion, but so in thrall to the techniques of
measurement, manipulation and dissembling that they cannot see how to change it.
Australia now faces serious challenges such as climate change, lopsided economic growth
in mining and non-mining states, and the exponentially increasing demands of an ageing
population, are two among many others.
Doing nothing will lead to disaster. Doing what is merely popular will lead to something
as bad or worse. The tragedy of Australian politics is that whoever wins today will find
that all the professionalism which has led to their victory has helped disable them for
the job they have just been given.
Sydney's The Daily Telegraph says a possible option for stability is a coalition win,
by any margin.
A surprise Tony Abbott victory against current odds would offer a more stable national
platform than continuing the life of the current government.
If Labor wins today, then performs as poorly in its second term as it has in its first,
the electorate will not be nearly as friendly.
It'll be 1996 all over again, when Labor under Keating was defeated by the coalition
led by John Howard.
Melbourne's The Age says Australians can expect more of the same at the next poll unless
they keep pushing for electoral reform.
A starting point would be fixed terms, to avoid months of election speculation before
the official campaign, putting much of the business of government on hold.
As for debates, a US-style debate commission would be likely to adopt a less restrictive
format that promotes the cut and thrust of genuine debate instead of prepared responses.
Truth-in-election-advertising laws are long overdue. The same is true of checks on
partisan government advertising.
Campaign donors in the past seven weeks will be disclosed only in February 2012. Given
today's technology, the lack of timely transparency is inexcusable.
Australians should demand elected leaders honour promises to improve the workings of
our democracy.
Melbourne's Herald Sun says judges continue to let down victims of crime despite huge
efforts by police and government in recent months to crack down on offenders.
Victoria Police has led a major state government campaign against criminal activity
and anti-social behaviour, including another weapons blitz planned for this weekend.
But when offenders make it to court, "judges, in giving weight to a prisoner's rehabilitation,
can fail to balance it with the loss suffered by the victim's family."
Seeing offenders walk free increases the pain victims feel.
Brisbane's The Courier-Mail says Queensland's Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC)
has begun operating in an adversarial fashion when it should be operating as a watchdog.
It is not a political force, union or advocacy group but an organisation with an invaluable
role in Queensland's institutional life.
"The CMC must repair some of the relationships damaged in recent months. It must reopen
lines of communication with some of the key offices with which it no longer speaks."
Queensland needs an independent, stable anti-corruption organisation that probes into
every corner with an open mind, the newspaper says.
CMC chairman Martin Moynihan "must prove he can lead a CMC that delivers on that front".

Bushfires NSW (SYDNEY)
Firefighters are bracing for erratic winds that could push bushfires closer to homes
already under threat on the New South Wales south coast.
A forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology says gusts up to 60 kilometres an hour are
forecasted to lash the Illawarra and south coasts into this morning.
And a Rural Fire Service spokesman says changing winds may shift the fires in a multitude
of directions, making it difficult to protect homes under threat.
Residents of Dolphin Point and Lake Tabourie .. in the Shoalhaven .. have been advised
by the Rural Fire Service to prepare their properties against flying embers and smoke.
The Princes Highway has been closed south of Burrill Lake.
Stimulus (SYDNEY)

Labor's 42 billion dollar economic stimulus package.
The advice .. prepared a week ago .. says the stimulus package may prove more effective
than first thought.
Fairfax Newspapers report it also states that unemployment is unlikely to hit the 8.5
per cent figure forecast in the federal budget in May.
The Treasury advice states it would be wrong to conclude the success of the stimulus
to date is an argument for winding back the stimulus still in the pipeline .. adding that
withdrawing it more quickly would risk stalling the economy and causing a steeper rise
in the the unemployment rate.
Meanwhile .. Treasurer WAYNE SWAN has told The Australian the government is committed
to its spending plans .. which he credits with helping Australia avoid recession.
Japan Vote (TOKYO)
Japan's Prime Minister TARO ASO has conceded defeat in elections .. as media exit polls

straight month this week .. but some warn rates could start going up before Christmas.
All 18 economists surveyed by AAP believe the central bank will keep the cash rate
at a 49-year low of three per cent at tomorrow's monthly board meeting.
However .. opinions differ on when .. and how quickly .. the RBA will start lifting
rates again as the economy recovers .. with the NAB predicting they'll rise by 50 basis
points in the December quarter .. while the Commonwealth .. ANZ .. and Westpac banks expect
the first rate hike will come early next year.
Women (SYDNEY)
A new alliance has called on the federal government to support equal pay for women.
The Equal Pay Alliance has formed to coincide with Equal Pay Day tomorrow .. with 135
community .. business and peak welfare bodies now members.
Australian Council of Trade Unions president SHARON BURROW says it's unacceptable working
women are still being short-changed.

this week .. following a run of better-than-expected economic data.
The median of 14 economists surveyed by AAP suggests the national accounts .. due out
on Wednesday .. will show gross domestic product grew by 0.7 per cent in the June quarter.
The median forecast for annual GDP growth is for an expansion of 0.7 per cent .. above
the Reserve Bank's mid-August prediction of 0.25 per cent in the year to June.
A positive GDP number for the June quarter would be the second in a row for the nation
.. which just avoided a recession in the three months to March when it posted 0.4 per
cent growth.
Markets Preview (SYDNEY)
The Australian sharemarket is expected to open flat today .. after US equities were
little changed .. and in anticipation of the Reserve Bank of Australia interest rate decision

Fed: Israel PM warns Aust against Iraq withdrawal
CANBERRA, April 17 AAP - Australian and US troops had to leave Iraq some time but should
do so in a way which maintained the reputation of the US as a major world power, Israel's
prime minister said today.
Ehud Olmert said he did not want to revisit whether the US should have gone into Iraq
in the first place.
"You are there. Others are there. The question is how should America pull out and the
other forces should pull out from Iraq," Mr Olmert told ABC radio from Jerusalem.
"I think they should pull out in a manner which will maintain the prestige and the
perception of America as a major power.
"Why? Because if the perception will be different then the possible consequences and
ramifications will be very unpleasant for the moderate forces in our part of the world.
And that is something we are worried about."
Mr Olmert said he was not saying that US and Australia and other forces should never leave Iraq.
"What I say it is your decision to make. It is America's decision to make," he said.
"What I just tell you as someone that lives in this part of the world for so many years
and has known a little bit about the dynamics of this part of the world, is that having
known what you have invested for so many years, how much it has cost you.
"Just think of what will be the possible ramifications of a premature pullout on the
standing of the forces which are essential for our interests and your interests and your
